After a lot of consideration, we the COSPA Board of Directors along with our community partners have taken a safety-first approach to both the closure and reopening of the 8 Calgary Outdoor Swimming Pools that we oversee.
At this time, the Silver Springs and Highwood Community Associations have decided to reopen their outdoor pools (Silver Springs Outdoor Swimming Pool and Highwood Outdoor Swimming Pool) for the 2020 summer season. They will have Alberta Health Services Covid-19 restrictions in place for the safety of the patrons and limited capacity available.
Mount Pleasant Community Association (operators for the Mount Pleasant Outdoor Swimming Pool) and Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Association (the operators of Bowview Outdoor Swimming Pool) have decided not to open their pools for the 2020 summer season.
COSPA, which operates Millican Ogden Outdoor Swimming Pool, Forest Lawn Outdoor Swimming Pool and Stanley Park Outdoor Swimming Pool will remain closed for the 2020 summer season. Our revenue needs to cover our expenses for successful operation and with the restriction in place due to Covid-19 this will not be achievable.
South Calgary Outdoor Swimming Pool will be closed due to renovations for the 2020/2021 seasons.

CALGARY LEARNS TO SWIM
The Forest Lawn Outdoor Pool is a safe space for youth to spend time
with their friends in the summer. We often see children come to the pool from open to close almost everyday! Some of them do not know how to swim, and others come without lunches or snacks. Many utilized the food programs available at their school during the academic year, but these programs often stop once school is out.
In our community, we saw a need for two important things:
In response to these needs, we developed the Calgary Learns to Swim program. In partnership with Calgary Meals on Wheels, the Calgary Learns to Swim program will offer free swimming lessons, followed by a free meal. The program will run at the Forest Lawn Outdoor Pool every Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 11am-12:30pm, from July 9th to August 29th. While aimed at low-income households, the program will be open to all youth aged 6-16. This will be a registered program, and participant numbers will be restricted based on the number of volunteer instructors recruited.
We are seeking to recruit volunteers, 14 years and older, who have good swimming skills, and enjoy working with kids. We are also seeking to recruit qualified swim instructors, 16 years and older, looking for volunteer teaching experience, to help with the lesson portion of the program. All volunteers and volunteer swim instructors would assist with both the lesson and meal portions of the program. This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals to give back to their city, and make a positive impact in our community, while gaining experience in teaching swimming lessons!
